Regression therapy is noted to have been developed by Sigmund Freud (1856 -1939). He was acknowledged as the father of modern psychology and the primary developer of the process of psychoanalysis. He was keen in the development of a technique that enabled a therapist to guide a client into a complete state of relaxation in order to reach the subconscious. In doing so past trauma and memories could be reached and safely confronted.
However regression also has a history dating back much further. Regression was practised thousands of years before. It is an ancient technique explored within Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism as well as by the Greeks, the Norse, the Celts and Egyptians.
Its mentioned in Chinese mythology and the yoga sutras.
It has been held in belief that regression can enable us to connect with current life purpose and release fears and anxieties from previous existences. In order to continue to guide us to a balanced well being.
The therapist will guide the client into a state of deep meditation. Once in this deep state the client will have access to their subconscious. This is the part of the brain that holds all the memories and emotions. All our habits, addictions and fears are stored here.
It is from here the client can recall memories that have been stored.
It is important that a safe place/memory is established first to enable the client to go to this memory when needed. This is a happy place/memory they can go to anytime they feel they need to re-establish a calm and happy state.
Once this has been reached, the therapist can guide the client deeper and deeper into further memories.
